What is the Sacrament of Baptism?

Baptism is the beginning of a life grafted onto Christ, and it is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation.  We invite you to view this short video (approx 3 mins) by way of introduction to this sacrament.

Celebrating Baptism in our Parish

It is an ancient tradition for infants to be baptised but children of all ages are welcome. If you would like to have a child baptised here in one of our communities you will need to choose the appropriate from below.

  • For a child in Grade 2 or younger, with at least one Catholic parent:
You will need to fill in and submit this form, nominating a Baptism Preparation Session (first Wednesday night of each month in Torquay) at least 2 months prior to your requested date for Baptism.

  • For a child in Grade 3 or older, with at least one Catholic parent:
Firstly, you will need to fill in and submit this form. The Parish staff will then get in touch with you to arrange which Baptism Preparation Program  will suit your family. Once the Preparation Program is completed you will then be able to choose a date for Baptism.

  • For a child of any age with non Catholic parents :
Firstly, you will need to fill in and submit this form. The Office Staff will then get in touch with you to arrange your participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), which begins in September and concludes at Easter. It is important to understand that the Catholic community desires that children to be baptised will have at least one parent who has sufficient knowledge of the faith and its teachings to be able to support the child in its faith growth over the years. A date for the child's baptism will not be made until after your participation in the RCIA. The child will then need to undertake a short program prior to their Baptism.

  • For a child already baptised in another Christian faith
There is only one Baptism in the Christian faith, so a child already baptised in another Christian faith will not be baptised again.  The process for this situation is that the child will be receive the Rite of Reception into the Catholic faith, after an appropriate formation according to age. Please Contact Us for more information.

In every instance of Baptism, parents will need to:
  • provide the Baptism certificate for any person nominating as already baptised.
  • invite at least one person, who is a baptised Catholic and who has been confirmed, to be a godparent. Where numerous godparents are nominated, they must all be baptised in a Christian faith, preferably the Catholic faith but not exclusively. All Christian godparents must provide copies of their baptism certificates.
  • make a contribution of $150 to the ongoing support of the Baptism Program and the general upkeep of the parish. Note: this fee is subject to change.
