What is the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick?

In days gone by, this sacrament was known as the "extreme unction" or last rites" and was usually celebrated when a person was close to death.  In more recent times the Church has delved deeper into its understanding of this sacrament and now speaks of celebrating this sacrament whenever a baptised person 'begins to be in danger of death because of illness or old age, through prayer and the anointing of the body with the oil of the sick. The proper effects of the sacrament include a special grace of healing and comfort to the Christian who is suffering the infirmities of serious illness or old age, and the forgiving of the person’s sins .'  (Catechism of the Catholic Church,  866)

Celebrating Anointing of the Sick in our Parish

This sacrament has two modes of celebration. It can be celebrated as part of Mass and this happens with some regularity, on a rotating roster at the various nursing homes in our parish.  This allows us to take the sacrament to those unable to come to the church.  Please see the roster on the left for the locations, dates and times.

This sacrament can also be celebrated for the individual so if you or someone you know needs anointing, please call the Parish Office on 52439891 to make arrangements for Fr Linh to call.  Fr Linh is always most willing to come to your home especially if there is some kind of medical or surgical procedure looming.

Additionally, Fr Linh is always welcomed at the nursing homes and hospitals in Geelong, in an emergency situation.
